Unofficial Kid Nation Blog
Welcome to the Unofficial Kid Nation Blog
I was watching TV and noticed a commercial for a new reality series called 'Kid Nation' on CBS. This got my attention so much I thought I would create a tumblr blog to chronicle the show and it's participants.
The basic premise of the show is that there are 40 kids ranging in age from 8 - 15 who are placed in a deserted town (really a movie ranch) for 40 days with no parents (besides a film crew, medic, child psychologist and producers) and create a functioning society. This show looks like it is going to be very cool, if it's done right. It will be interesting to see kids react and take care of themselves. I know as a kid I was always curious about what that would be like.
Take care and Stay Tuned!

Thanks to our friends over at The Smoking Gun, you can now view the actual contract that the Kid Nation Parent(s) had to sign in order for their child to participate in the show. I’ve included a link to the contract below.

Interesting Excerpts:
- The show was originally going to be called “The Manhattan Project”.
- Parents signed away their rights to sue the network and the show’s producers if their child died, was severely injured, or contracted a sexually transmitted disease.

As I was surfing for Kid Nation News this morning I found a great interview with 12 of the kids from Kid Nation by Entertainment Weekly. I’ve included a link to the interview below.
Here are a few tidbits from the interview:
- The “Gold Star” awards are $20,000 and are given out each episode. The gold star is actually a real GOLD star.
- The kids were only allowed to bring three (3) outfits and no toothbrush.
- Some of the kids were found in open auditions. While other kids were plucked from gifted and talented organizations (music camps, theaters, national spelling bees, and a local rodeo).

So I was just doing a little research on the new CBS reality tv series Kid Nation and I found out some cool facts I thought you might be interested in:
- The show will air on CBS September 19th 2007 filling the Jericho time slot.
- The show takes place at the Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch (eight miles south of Santa Fe, NM. Site was featured in films such as “Silverado” and “All the Pretty Horses”.
- Participants were paid $5,000 each for their involvement in the show (not counting “Gold Star” awards - more on that later)
- The show was filmed during the school year, yet no studio teaches were present.
- CBS declared the production a “summer camp” instead of a place of employment to take advantage of a child labor law loophole in NM (which is now closed — causing Season 2 troubles).
- Casting for Season 2 of Kid Nation has already begun.
That’s all for now. I’ll try and post additional facts as I find them. Know of something I’ve missed? Send it to me and I’ll post it and credit you.
